Our Commitment to Lifesaving Through TNVR
At The Humane Society of Sarasota County, we are dedicated to saving lives and improving the welfare of all animals in our community. One of the most impactful ways we achieve this is through TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return), an internationally proven practice that humanely manages free-roaming cat populations.
Why TNVR?
TNVR is the most humane and cost-effective way to stabilize community cat populations. Through this program, feral and free-roaming cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and then returned to their original outdoor colonies.
This approach:
- Prevents overpopulation by stopping the cycle of endless litters.
- Improves feline health by vaccinating against Rabies (a human health hazard) and feline-specific viruses.
- Reduces nuisance behaviors such as fighting, yowling, and spraying.
A key component of TNVR’s success is the involvement of dedicated volunteer colony caretakers. These compassionate individuals monitor the health of the cats, provide food, and ensure they have adequate shelter, helping them thrive in their environment. With their help, TNVR leads to healthier, more stable cat communities while reducing the burden on local shelters and animal control services.
By committing to TNVR, The Humane Society of Sarasota County actively supports a humane and sustainable solution for community cats. Together, with the help of volunteers and advocates, we are making a lasting difference for Sarasota’s feline population.

How to Trap a Community Cat
For a successful and stress-free trapping experience:
- Skip feeding at least one day prior to trapping.
- Trap early in the morning or late at night.
- Do not leave traps unattended.
- Make sure to use stinky food such as wet cat food, tuna, fish or boneless fried chicken to lure them into the trap.
- Line the bottom of the trap with newspaper or cardboard, making sure not to cover the trigger.
- Do not trap more than two days prior to surgery.
By committing to TNVR, you’re directly contributing to a healthier, safer, and more humane future for Sarasota’s community cats. Together, we can make a lasting difference!
