On an average Wednesday of an average week, I turned the corner of Pod 3 and heard our medical supervisor say, "Hey, do you want to foster a puppy?"
Now, everyone knows that I exercise my executive privilege by fostering kittens. So, as I rushed to say "no" she craftily sticks the cutest puppy on Earth under my nose. I was immediately unable to resist that puppy breath. Resistance is futile.
Little Rocky really did need round-the-clock care those first two weeks. He required daily bandage changes, skilled treatment of his wounds, and a watchful eye to ensure he didn't scratch or bite at his painful sores. My daughter and I embraced our chosen duty with passion and loved on that little guy with every fiber of our being – much to my own dogs' ire.
To say I was tempted to adopt him would be an understatement. The consensus from all of the staff and volunteers who saw me cradling my new "baby" was that it was inevitable. I almost agreed with them.
But then I heard about "Michelle" (named changed for privacy) and I knew instantly that she needed a Rocky in her life and that he needed her. It's a story right out of a movie starring Jennifer Anniston. Career USAF veteran returns from a tough overseas deployment, ready to retire into civilian life, and needing a little buddy to restore her heart.
This match is literally what we live for at HSSC. It's pure magic and the very meaning of what going Beyond Shelter means to us. We are so grateful to our partner, Sun Outdoors Sarasota, who funded our military adoption program in full this year. Little Rocky is now living his best life, and we couldn't ask for more.
