Over the past 67 years, the Humane Society of Sarasota County has grown from sheltering 54 animals to housing up to 150 animals each day and 1,800 each year.
We have grown to be the area’s premier no-kill shelter. The momentum generated by our community-enriching programs and services is ushering in a new era for HSSC. While our current facility has served us well for many years, we have reached a point where our infrastructure is limiting our mission. A thoughtful, sustainable expansion will enable us to do more lifesaving work for animals—both now and in the decades to come.
We are launching a capital campaign to renovate and expand our shelter, which will allow us to care for more animals, accommodate more special cases, and grow our outreach and education programs. We take tremendous pride in being the area’s premier no-kill shelter, and with that comes the responsibility to lead by example. Our new facility will serve as the hub for animal welfare in Sarasota and beyond.
This is an exciting time for the Humane Society of Sarasota County, and we hope you will join us as we build the future of the Humane Society of Sarasota County together.
After careful consideration, our Board of Directors has approved plans for the biggest renovation and expansion in HSSC history. The improvements and additions will create an expanded campus for our vital and lifesaving work. Two of our three existing buildings will be replaced, and we will be adding nearly 20,000ft2. We will take great care to salvage all useable fixtures and equipment previously donated. Our project team has studied the latest research and trends in animal welfare, and we have incorporated many amazing innovations into the design. The sustainable design is intended to serve our needs for decades to come.
Construction will be divided into two phases to minimize animal disruption and to allow us time to raise the funds, as we will not be borrowing money. We expect the project to take 18 months and to cost approximately $8,500,000.
Our capacity to serve will grow exponentially with this expansion. The enhanced facilities will allow us to shelter, treat, and find homes for 50% more animals each year.
Like spokes on a wheel, there are many components to creating a community where all animals are cared for and loved: spay/neuter, shelter space, preventive care, affordable medical care, education, food access, training and behavior resources. These are all things we already provide, but we will be able to do even more after the expansion.
Our new facility will be a friendly space where people and animals can interact. With the expanded opportunities for animal welfare and humane education, HSSC will be positioned as a leader in best practices for humane animal care.
This exciting project will create a very special place where animals are saved, where second chances are given, and where people and animals in the Sarasota area come together to help, heal, learn, and love. Our future will be built entirely on gifts from generous people who understand and want to support the needs of animals right here in Sarasota County. Can we count on your help?
