2019 Last Chance Appeal

Despite her queenly stature, Cleopatra had not lived a life of leisure. The young Great Dane’s right eye was badly damaged. She was skinny, suffering, and scared. She needed more help than the overcrowded local shelter that took her in off the streets could provide. We got to Cleopatra just in time. And thanks to people who support the Humane Society of Sarasota County — animal lovers just like you — we were able to save this sweet girl.

With your gift today, you can save abandoned, neglected, and sometimes abused animals.

Poor Cleopatra’s eye could not be saved, so we removed it and gave her the medical care she needed. We also gave her the nourishment to make up for years of neglect by others. Once she was physically healthy, she was adopted almost instantly.

But some wounds are invisible, and Cleopatra failed to adapt to her new home and was returned. Our staff and volunteers spent the next six months giving her love and reassurance. We knew she would require a special home, and eventually a kind man fostered and adopted her. Cleopatra simply needed the luxury of time, so we gave her all the time she needed.

It would have been easy to write Cleopatra off as too difficult or too costly. But we are the area’s premier no-kill shelter because we never set time limits. We care for hundreds of dogs and cats with similar circumstances each year. We never give up on our animals.

Cleopatra Before

When she arrived at HSSC, Cleopatra was skinny, scared, and her right eye was badly damaged. We got right to work healing her.

Cleopatra After

Cleopatra received top-notch medical care and was a beloved shelter pet while she waited for her furever family.

Time and space are not free. We could not do what we do without the support of your neighbors and friends. They know we are not affiliated with any other humane organization—national or local—and that we rely on donations to fulfill our lifesaving mission. Please join your neighbors today with a gift to support the Humane Society of Sarasota County.

On behalf of the animals who will be helped by your kindness, thank you so much. Together we can rescue so many more animals like Cleopatra.

With gratitude,

Christen Benson
Executive Director
